How To Reformat Your Computer

In some occasions, be it because you have reasons to suspect that the virus you caught has permanently damaged your system, because your PC is getting way slower than it used to be, or even just as a scheduled maintenance practice, reformatting your computer can be an useful way of 'cleaning up the mess' and regain all the computational speed your PC used to have when you turned it on for the first time. This article provides you with an easy step-by-step guide to make sure a smooth reformatting process.

As the first step, make sure you have a copy of the operating system you want to install, and all the installation files of the programs you need most, or at least make sure you know where to get them. You'll need to backup all the important data in your hard disk(s). Save all important files (a 'safe' choice is to backup the entire C:\Documents and Settings\ on Windows, and the /home folder on Linux) to an optical drive or an external USB drive -- in this last case, remember to correctly unmount and remove the disk before restarting the system. Consider including into the backup also the most important application files and an archive containing your e-mails. If this is the first time reformatting your computer, it's always best to take at least a day or two to make sure you don't forget any important file into the backup.

When you're sure you're good to go on to the next step, insert the CD/DVD of the operating system of your choice and restart. If nothing happens (e.g., the computer restarts normally), that means there is one little more step to go: when you restart, check the initial messages and press the right button to enter the boot devices setup screen (the button is usually F7, but it depends on the underlying system) and select the CD-ROM drive as the first device from which to boot -- you might want to roll back this setting once you're done reformatting).

At this point, your system will boot up from the CD-ROM. Follow the instructions carefully, particularly when you're asked to format your hard drive and delete all files on it -- if you're sure all the data is safe and backed up, go on with the OS installation. This will typically take one to two hours and requires little amount of configuration by the user (including assigning keyboard layout, system language, time, user names and passwords...).

Once the system is installed, you can remove the installation CD-ROM. If you wish, you can restart to change a setting so that even if you forget a CD-ROM in the drive, your PC won't do fancy things -- to do that, see the simple instructions above. Now, all you have to do is simply to take your backup unit and copy all the data back into the new system. Install all the programs you need, either from installers of from the Internet, and finally restart one more time (most program installations require restarting). If you're running on Windows, it might be a good idea to install an anti virus as soon as possible.

Computers are getting more and more common in this day and age, we have a strong reliance on these "household appliances" that it would be almost improbable to imagine living one day without these luxuries by our sides. However, the ever non-satisfied personality of humans pushes towards greater excellence and not just do we want convenience, but rather, we desire to have convenience in an instant. For example, the traditional way of brewing coffee has now been restricted to 3 in 1 sachets of coffee power or the way to fill our stomachs is either to order take out or drop by any fast food outlet and grab a quick bite.

Nonetheless, we too want our lives to not only be enhanced, but also to be accelerated, to do things fast and quick. It is no wonder that when we face with something trying to slow our hectic lifestyle, we feel uncomfortable and queasy. One of such "things" is especially when our computer begins to slow down in its functions and ability. As mentioned earlier, computers are as good as our daily companion, we do practically most of our work in it and for it to not function at its maximum capacity, it only irritates us as business deals worth millions can be just in that one click away.

In this article we will look into some of the ways by which you can increase the speed of your computer.

1. Upgrade your RAM

If you have reason to believe that your computer has been around for too long and its components are not up to date, you may want to consider upgrading your RAM to give your computer more available memory. Upgrading memory now is becoming much cheaper but you should only do this if you already know that a lack of memory is the cause of your PC speed problems.

2. Deal with your computer's registry

The registry section of our computers is not commonly familiar amongst users however it does play an important role that may be the reason for your computer slowing down. This section contains numerous files named registry keys that instruct your computer how it should run. However, if a computer has been used over a long period of time, there is a high chance whereby some of the files have become corrupted or missing resulting in a slowing down of the computer's performance. How you should handle such a problem is to download the cleaner software immediately. Followed by scanning through your computer to find our whether there are errors in our registry and fix your computer's registry if there are.

Another cause for registry problems is the presence of false entries. Your computer constantly makes and deletes entries from your registry and this causes the formation of false entries. Moreover, spyware and viruses also leave behind lots of false entries even after they have been removed successfully. Thus after running through a virus scan and eradicating them off, you also have to run a registry cleaner to ensure your computer is functioning at maximum capacity.

3. Stop having multiple programs

Some people love to multi-task everything they need to complete at the same time. For example, a person at work may be using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word together with a dozen pages of websites while researching and at the same time is chatting with friends or colleagues through the web messenger. No wonder the computer would be processing so slowly! Each computer has its limits and if you step beyond them, it would cause it to function below its peak potential.

Laptop Screen Removal - Here's the Easy Way

Has your laptop screen suffered some damage? Do you need to replace it for some reason? If so, then this is the perfect article for you. Why? Because, I am about to take you through the entire process of removing a laptop screen. I will take you through the simple, step-by-step, process to make the necessary repairs required.

It's really not as hard as it may seem at first. If your laptop has a non-functioning display, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that the problem is really with the screen. Now of course, if the screen is broken it's rather obvious. But just because something is not displaying on the screen does not mean that the source of the problem is with the screen. So the first recommendation is to hook up an external monitor to see if it's really the screen is broken or something else.

Now, before you go out and buy a new LCD screen, make sure you carefully look over the screen that you currently have. This will give you the opportunity to see any potential problems that are causing the display problem with your computer. Also, by doing this, you can find the correct replacement part number so the new screen at you buy is the correct one for your laptop.

Before you take off the screen, make sure that you disconnect your laptop from the power supply and remove the battery. You won't need any complicated tools to accomplish this task. Really, all you need is two screwdrivers, one a Phillips head screwdriver and the other a small flat head. Why are these needed? Simply to remove the screws and a screw covers.

The next step involves what is called the bezel. This is the rubber that is spam around the screen. After you have removed the screws, place your fingers at the bottom of the screen and slowly remove the bezel. Carefully continue working around the edge of the screen until you have removed the entire bezel.

At this point you should have your screen sitting in a metal frame. All you need to do now is to tilt the screen forward, and separate it from the plastic shell right behind it. Is the screen having a connection problem? Is the problem as simple as replacing a broken cable or receiving a loose cable? Sometimes this is the case.

Look carefully for the part number on the back of the screen and carefully write it down. This is the number that you will need to find a replacement. The easiest way to do this is to go online and search based on this part number. Once you have perceived the new screen carefully unplug the old screen from the connector. Then connect the new screen and carefully replace the bezel, putting the screws back on.

And the last step, of course, is to power up your computer and check to ensure that the screen is operating properly.

It's really as simple as that. As long as you are careful this is really quite a simple job that can be done at home.
